Abstract
Hydrocarbons are produced by the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide over an unsupported iron catalyst, acetylene or other gaseous hydrocarbon having a triple bond, e.g. vinylacetylene or allylene, being present in the feed. By the addition of the acetylene, a reduction of about 20 DEG C. in the synthesis temperature is possible with a high yield of hydrocarbons boiling above 320 DEG C. The synthesis gas may contain 0.5-10, preferably 0.5-1, per cent of the acetylenic hydrocarbon. The catalyst is preferably impregnated with an alkali metal salt of a non-volatile acid, e.g. potassium phosphate and/or silicate, equivalent to 1-10 per cent K2O on the total iron, and reduced at 250 DEG C. with hydrogen and nitrogen at a high rate of flow of 1-2 m./sec. In an example, the catalyst contains 100 parts iron, 5 parts copper, and KH2PO4 equivalent to 3 parts K2O, reduction being effected to 40 per cent free iron. Water gas containing 1.5 per cent acetylene is passed at 200 DEG C. and 100 normal litres/litre/hour.
