Abstract
Acrylonitrile is produced from hydrogen cyanide and gas mixtures containing acetylene and at least 10 per cent by volume of carbon monoxide by leading the reactants through solutions of cuprous salts of strong inorganic acids, preferably containing ammonium salts and/or alkali metal salts and strong inorganic acids, the solutions also containing salts of rare earth metals. The catalyst may be dissolved in water or in inert organic solvents such as glycols, formamide and acetamide and the reaction may be carried out at superatmospheric pressure. Ceric or lanthanum salts are suitable rare earth metal salts. In the examples, hydrogen cyanide and a mixture of acetylene, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen are passed over an aqueous catalyst solution containing (4) cuprous chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid and ceric chloride, and (b) cuprous chloride, lanthanum acetate, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid, to give acrylonitrile.ALSO:Catalysts, for the production of acrylonitrile from hydrogen cyanide and gas mixtures containing acetylene and carbon monoxide, consist of solutions of cuprous salts containing salts of rare earth metals and preferably also containing ammonium salts and/or alkali metal salts and strong inorganic acids. Suitable solvents for the catalysts are, for example, water, glycols, formamide and acetamide. In the examples hydrogen cyanide and gas mixtures containing acetylene and carbon monoxide react to give acrylonitrile in the presence of aqueous solutions of (a) cuprous chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid and ceric chloride; and (b) cuprous chloride, lanthanum acetate, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid.
