Electric and magnetic speed indicators.- Relates to instruments having a rotary magnet and a fixed cup armature between which is arranged a drag element, and consists in making the magnet of bar form. A vertical shaft 3 journaled in a frame 1 is adapted for connection to a driving shaft. A worm 5 and gear 7 drive the usual odometer. A clip 9 secures the shaft 3 against endwise movement. Upon a reduced part of the shaft is pressed a bar magnet 13 made up of several bar magnets secured together. A fixed cup-shaped armature 8 is carried by the frame. The drag element 20 is carried by a spindle 21 carried at one end in a rotating bearing 23 and mounted in a fixed bearing 24 at the other end. A stop 26 limits upward movement of the spindle. A hair spring 27 brings the spindle back to its zero position. The drag element is graduated and a pointer is provided on a cut-away portion of the armature. Pole pieces 37 may be mounted to slide longitudinally on the magnet and connected by U-shaped bimetallic strips to a centre plate 45 so that the air-gap between the magnet and the drag element is varied to compensate for temperature variations. 'The top bearing may be provided with a gland packed with fine cotton to check unsteadiness in the indicating needle.
