Liquid-piston pumps.-In a pressure-fluid system in which a fluid is caused to flow alternately in opposite directions to act upon some form of mechanism, or upon another fluid, the reversal of flow is effected by an endwise movable valve which is moved at timed intervals by hydraulic or electromagnetic means under the control of a device rotated at reduced speed by a power drive, for instance, by the shaft of a centrifugal pump constituting the source of pressure of the system. Fig. 1 shows a centrifugal pump 1 with a pistonvalve device 5 connected to the pump delivery and return pipes 3, 4, and to external conduits 15, 16. The piston valves 9, 10 are periodically moved by a servomotor 20, the actuating fluid for which is taken from the pump 1 and admitted under the control of a valve 28 driven by worm gearing from the pump shaft 2, so as to give a reciprocating flow in the conduits 15, 16. The piston valves may be replaced by a D slide-valve and may be actuated electromagnetically. The reciprocating flow of a suitable liquid such as water or oil may be utilized for the pumping of inflammable or corrosive liquids. An arrangement for pumping petrol is shown in Fig. 3. The reciprocating flow of water from the conduits 15, 16 passes to two tanks 50, 51 and by its action draws in petrol from a tank 55 through pipes 56, 57 fitted with non-return valves 60 and discharges it through delivery pipes 61, 62 also fitted with non- return valves 65. Perforated diaphragms 63 are fitted in each tank 50, 51 and the levels of the water are arranged not to pass therebeyond but preferably to oscillate between the levels a-b; a cock 54 in a, connecting pipe 53 permits adjustment before starting. A remote reciprocating pump may be driven by the reciprocating flow. The device, driven by any suitable power, may be applied to a fluid pressure system to provide an alternating flow of fluid which may be utilized to actuate a pump. The device may be used to give a reciprocating flow of liquid through keirs or the like.
