Abstract

322,903. Payne, F. E. Nov. 6, 1928, [Convention date]. Joint-making packing. - A cotton, hemp, asbestos, &c. cord 10 is wrapped in thin sheet metal such as babbit foil, thin copper or aluminum, which metal is arranged to form a web to hold it in position. The core may be of soft compressible metal, or may have a spiral jacket made from a long narrow strip 11 of thin flexible metal which may be held in position by a string 12 or cement. A strip of metal 13 is folded around the core and one end 14 is folded over the other, Fig. 6. The packing is preferably passed between knurling rollers which flatten the head 10. The web may be slit or folded to facilitate bending, Fig. 3. Methods of applying the packing to oil pan covers, rectangular surfaces, &c., are described.
