The invention aims to provide a new and y improved packing for rods and shafts, enibodying folded soft metal strips, yet of such construction that it is sufficiently flexible to be Wrapped around a rod or shaft of one diameter or another, the packing' being of such nature that it may be effectively compressed and forced into tight contact with the rod or shaft by tightening of the usual gland yof the stuning box or the like with which the packing'k is used.

In the construction shown in lFigs.V 1 to 4,
' two pliable metal strips 10'and11, formed of tin, lead orother soft metal, are folded back and forth across each other to provide amul tiplicity of contacting,interconnected reaches 10a and 11a, the bends 10b and 11b at the ends Y of such reaches,iextending around and contacting with longitudinal edgesfof the strips. By this construction, any desired number of the interconnected reaches ,lOafe-llarmay be f provided, to form an elongated packing inember of any desired length and it Will be obvious that due to the pliability of the metal,
this packing meinbermay readily flex to permit wrapping thereof around shafts or rods of different diameters.
Preferably, all reaches of the packing are secured together .with a filler or binder of rubber, gutta-percha or the like and this substance may be used for holding said packing in a channel-shaped "shell 12 such asthat shown in F ig. 2. rlhis shell may be formed of fabric, asbestos or any other desired mate` rial andits openk side exposes the metallic packing forcontactwith the rod or shaft. When the packing is installed in a stuffing box or the like and the gland thereof is tightened, said packing-is laterally coin- 14-14 are folded back and forth across the strips 155-13. In the forni 0f construction illustrated in Fig. 9, three n'ietal strips 1T-17-1S, are used. The strips 17-17 are folded back and fort-h across the single strip 18 providing reaches TTL-17, and similarly the strip 18 is folded back and forth across said strips 17-17, providing reaches 18a. Longitudinal edges of the strips in this forni of construction as Well as in that shown in Fig. 8
are seated in the bends or folds of the metal strips. Moreover, it will be understood that these constructions and that shown in Fig. 7 may embody a suitable elastic filler or binder and may if desired be associ ate-d with a Hexzoible shell such as 12 of Fig. 2. f
Any form of the invention may be easily and inexpensively manufactured, 1n ay be applied with ease on account of its unusual flexibility, and when compressed by the usual '.5 gland or the like of. a. stulling box, will provide an effective fluid-tight seal.
As above stated, variations inay be made within the scope of the invention as claimed and obviously I ain not restricted to size or materials.
I claim 1. In a packing7 flexible strips folded bach and forth across each other to prov'de ay ninltiplicity of contacting interconnected reaches which jointly forni an elongated body, the folds of anyy of said strips being disposed around and in contact with longitudinal edge portions of another of said strips.
2. In a packing, a plurality of flexible 40 strips, another strip or strips across which said plurality of strips are folded back and forth` said other strip' or stripsbeing also folded back and forth across said plinalit'y of strips, providing a nlultiplieity of contacting interconnected reaches which jointly form an elongated body.
A structure specified in claim 2; adjacent reaches of the strips of said plurality being folded in opposite directions.
4. In a packing, Hefiible strips folded back and forth across each other to provide a Inuly tiplicity of contacting interconnected reaches which jointly forni an. elongated body. the. fol-d lines of any of said strips being dini( ed longitudinally of longitudinal portions of another of said strips.
