322,792. Colas Products, Ltd., Gabriel, L. G., and Blott, J. F. Sept. 13, 1928. Emulsions, making.-Bitumen of the type artificially prepared from petroleum is emulsified with gelatine glue or other gelatinous substance in mineral acid solution, with or without the use of a colloid mill, or with aqueous non-alkaline gelatine or other gelatinous substance employing a colloid mill. Examples of the invention are as follow-(1) Equal quantities of Mexican asphalt at 110‹C and a 2 per cent aqueous gelatine solution at 80‹C are passed simultaneously through a colloid mill, (2) The gelatine solution in (1) is acidified before use by addition of sufficient sulphuric acid to make the solution approximately decinormal. The colloid mill employed is preferably of the truncate cone type. The emulsion may be employed in making roads; for example concrete comprising 4 parts Thames ballast, 2 parts sand and 1 part Portland cement may be mixed with 10 per cent of the above emulsion.
