321,738. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 21, 1928. Samples furnished. Quinoline derivatives are prepared by interaction, if desired in a solvent or diluent, of a 2- or 4-alkylquinoline halogenated in the 4- or 2- position, or a halogen derivative thereof, with an aminobenzene carboxylic acid or ester. The products are useful therapeutically or as intermediates for the manufacture of therapeutic substances and dyestuffs. Examples are given of the preparation of (1) 4-methyl-2-phenylaminoquinoline-21- (3<1> and 4<1>)-carboxylic acids and their ethyl esters by heating in nitrobenzene, or by fusing, 2-chloro-4-methylquinoline with o (m and p)-aminobenzoic acids or their ethyl esters; when esters are the products, they may be saponified to the acids; (2) 2-methyl-4-phenyl- . aminoquinoline-4<1>-carboxylic acid by heating 4- chloro-2-methylquinoline with p-aminobenzoic acid ethyl ester in dichlorbenzene solution, and saponifying the ester formed.
