Abstract

321,207. Reid, J. Aug. 1, 1928. Forced draught systems.-In forced draught systems in which a fan supplies air to a series of boiler furnaces or fuel burners, means are provided for equalizing the flow over the cross-section of the ducts, for minimizing the ill effects of the bends in the ducts, and for equalizing the flow to the various points of delivery. In the installation shown in Fig. 1, the furnaces of five boilers a are supplied with air from a fan c through a main trunk d leading to branch ducts. At bends in the trunk system curved vanes e are arranged to counteract the tendency of the air to shoot past the bends and flow mainly along the outer wall; similar vanes e are placed at the openings of the branch ducts into the air heaters. between the division plates x and the walls of the ducts. For the same reason, the outer and inner walls of the ducts are curved at the bends as shown at n the outer bends extending outside the planes of the outer walls. The fan c is connected to the duct d by a flaring mouth, and in the duct is placed a cellular structure g to distribute the air flow evenly over the section. To allow the flow to the branch ducts to be adjusted adjustable nose portions are provided on the division plates h. The connecting chambers (not shown) between the air ducts and the air casings on the furnace fronts expand in the direction of flow, or expand transversely and contract longitudinally of the boiler. The funnel draught on the furnaces is equalized by division plates and guide vanes in the flues between the air heaters and the funnel. Fig. 4 shows a battery of boilers each supplied with air from a separate fan c. The air, after passing through a heater t enters a trunk d extending down the bank of, below, and up the front of the furnace to the burners u. Curved guide vanes e, f, and cellular diffusing structures g are provided in the trunks d, which are fitted with division plates (not shown) dividing them into a number of passages, one to each burner. Cross plates w in the base of the funnel divide it into passages, one connected to each furnace. Specifications 223,948 and 224,965 are referred to.
