Abstract

321,157. Robertson, J. H. July 27, 1928. Compound transparent sheets. - Drawn glass sheets are united to each face of a central sheet of celluloid or the like by means of a coating of gelatine dissolved in phenol applied cold to the glass and allowed to set, the coated sheets being immersed in a bath of propyl alcohol or industrial spirit and gently pressed on a sheet of celluloid or the like placed between them. While soft, the gelatine solution may have applied thereto a layer of celluloid dissolved in amyl acetate with or without a small quantity of phenol. The gelatine solution is formed by warming 20 parts pure phenol crystals with 1 part of distilled water and adding 4 to 8 parts of hard gelatine, the solution being filtered. When removed from the alcohol bath, the sheets are pressed between absorbent materials at 200 lb. and 50‹ to 60‹ C. temperature for 10 to 15 minutes. When a centre sheet of cellulose acetate is used, it is coated with a 10 per cent alcoholic solution of gelatine or an acetone solution of celluloid. The glass is cleaned by nitric acid or a polishing powder, with subsequent washing in running and distilled water. A sealing mixture for the. edges may consist of 20 parts rosin, 20 parts beeswax, and one part of tallow melted and stirred with 10 parts of precipitated chalk. Specification 296,026 is refarred to.
