Abstract

319,747. Pauly, H., and Feuerstein, K. Sept. 27, 1928, [Convention date]. Vanillin is obtained by treating at temperatures of 90‹ C. or below lignins, or materials containing the latter with oxidizing agents used for oxidizing aromatic isopropenyl compounds to aldehydes, the quantity of oxidizing agent employed corresponding to the obtainable amount of vanillin and being determined empirically for each sample of raw material by plotting the yield of vanillin against the quantity of oxidizing agent taken. The following starting materials are mentioned : incrusted vegetable fibrous materials such as mosses, grasses, straw, esparto, hemp, flax, jute, ramie, wood, aged vegetable materials such as peat, lignite and brown coal, lyes containing lignins, and lignin constituents separated therefrom e.g., straw, lye lignin and the constituents of cellulose lyes, such as ligninsulphonic acid. After extraction of the vanillin, the mass mav be hydrolyzed with acids and a second yield of vanillin obtained. According to examples: (1) pine wood sawdust is oxidized with ozone in the presence of acetic acid until it is decolorized. The product is hydrolized with sulphuric acid and extracted with ether after removing excess of sulphuric and acetic acids; (2) dry powdered peat is treated with a solution of chromic acid in acetic acid, hydrolyzed with sulphuric acid and the vanillin extracted as in example 1. Chromates, permanganates, and activated oxygen are also mentioned as suitable oxidizing agents. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (8) (a) comprises also the following example : a mixture of ligninsulphonic acid and sulphanilic acid is oxidized by means of chromic acid. After treatment with sulphuric acid, the vanillin is extracted with benzol. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
