Packeting by wrapping-up. - In a wrapping- machine, means are provided for preventing the feeding of articles in incorrectly timed relation to the operation, and for preventing the feeding of a, wrapper if no article is in position. In the general operation of the machine, the articles a, Fig. 2, are fed by a continuously moving belt 10 over a support 11 and against an abutment 12. An elevator 13, duplicated to straddle the belt, raises the foremost article into a wrapping channel 14, a depending plate 15 acting as a temporary abutment while the elevator is raised. A wrapper W is delivered into supports 16 so as to be carried up into the channel by the article. The web feeding device is driven from a continuously rotating shaft 31, Fig. 4, having a clutch 33 and sprocket 29 on a sleeve. Above the support 11 along which the articles a are fed, arms 52 carrying rollers 54 are mounted. The rollers are normally in the position shown in Fig. 11, in front of an article. Periodically, they are raised by the action of a cam 36, Fig. 4, upon a roller 43 connected by links to the arms 52, and allow the article to pass to the right, Fig. 12, while the elevator 13 is in its raised position, coming to rest against the plate 15 during the descent of the elevator. If no article is present, the rollers remain in the lower position and the pin of the roller 43 engages a pawl to declutch the sleeve from the shaft 31 and to stop the paper feed.
