Condensation products of urea and thiourea with formaldehyde.-Urea is heated in the presence of ammonia with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde, or of a polymer such as paraformaldehyde or trioxymethylene, the mixture having a pH value between 5.2 and 7.0; after short boiling, thiourea is added and the boiling continued for several hours until a sample does not dissolve in water. At this point a retarding agent, comprising a salt of a strong base with a weak acid such as sodium acetate, is added, and the filtered liquid then concentrated, preferably in vacuo. When about 20 per cent has been removed, the excess of formaldehyde is eliminated, preferably by addition of urea; when 30 per cent has been driven off, formic acid is added and the concentration continued until the product may be cast while hot in a mould. Instead of formic acid, other acids and acid salts may be used, e.g. acetic and tartaric acids, acid potassium sulphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, aluminium chloride and acetyl chloride. The moulded jelly is finally heated during a period of weeks at gradually increasing temperature up to 180‹ F., whereupon the bubbles rise to the surface and a hard glass-like product is obtained. Prior to casting, the liquid may be coloured with soluble dyes or may be mixed with fillers or pigments. Examples are given. Specifications 294,253 and 294,254 are referred to.
