Urea-formaldehyde condensation products. - Colourless condensation products suitable for use as glass substitutes are obtained by dissolving urea in an aqueous solution of a formaldehyde polymer of a strength exceeding 40 per cent, boiling the solution for a short time in an open vessel, and hardening the product by further beating at a temperature below 100‹ C. The formaldehydepolymer solution is obtained by the use of suitable reagents, such as ammonia, alkalies, and amines, salts such as formates, acetates, and sulphites, or acids such as hydrochloric and aromatic sulphonic acids, which reagents, particularly if they are capable of affecting the condensation catalytically, are used only in the amount required to produce the solution. In an example, 504 parts of paraformaldehyde are dissolved in 100 parts of 7 per cent ammonia and 200-240 parts of water, and 480 parts of urea are dissolved in the solution. The solution, after heating to boiling in an open vessel for about ten minutes, gives a viscous product which, prior to hardening, may be mixed with soluble dyes or with insoluble pigments and filling materials.
