Lighting burners, pipes, cigars, and the like by electric devices; lighting- torches, non-clectric. -A torch 14 is ignited by the sparks passing between electrodes 21, 22 in the secondary circuit of a spark-coil 30 when the movable electrode 22 is pressed downwardly by the torch to close a switch 27, 28 in the primary circuit of the coil. The electrode 21 is carried by a porcelain standard 20 on the casing 5 and is connected to a hightension terminal of the coil, the other terminal being connected to the casing, preferably by an angle plate 31. The electrode 22 is mounted on the upper end of the switch plunger 23 in a porcelain sleeve 24 and is electrically connected by a return spring 40 with a plate 25 secured to the casing. The coil may be connected to a battery or, through a choke or resistance, to a power line. The battery may be secured in the casing between a fixed metal strip and a plate 34 secured between the bottom of the coil and a second fixed strip 32. The torch, normally supported in an extinquishing funnel 5, is a non-conductor of electricity and comprises an absorbent asbestos or other element 16 which becomes saturated with fuel by contact with a felt pad 13 arranged above a wick 12 in the fuel-container 8.
