Alcohols; oxygenated organic compounds.-In carrying out reactions in the gaseous phase particularly in the presence of gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or hydrogen sulphide which attack the material of the apparatus, a small quantity of an inert substance, which remains liquid, such as paraffin wax, is introduced in such a manner that it forms a protective film on the surfaces of the apparatus. The reaction mixture may be introduced at the upper end of the apparatus, or it may be admitted at the lower end with a considerable velocity so that the liquid is carried up the walls of the apparatus. The application of the process to the synthesis of alcohols and of oxygenated organic compounds in general is referred to.
