Abstract

317,303. Johnson, J. Y., (T. C. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 13, 1928. Grant of Patent refused. Diolefines. - In the pyrogenic production of diolefines, especially butadiene and isoprene, by decomposition of cyclic or acyclic paraffins and higher olefines, those portions of the decomposition apparatus in which a temperature of 500‹ C. or more is maintained, or the inner surfaces thereof, are constructed of chromium, vanadium or manganese, or such alloy steels as contain substantial quantities of chromium, nickel, vanadium, manganese, cobalt, molybdenum or tungsten, or of iron with a coating of chromium, copper, graphite, aluminium or a noble metal. The process may be carried out at ordinary, reduced or elevated pressure, and in the presence or absence of other gases, e.g. nitrogen or steam. According to examples, (1) a tube of V2A steel, charged with granular magnesium oxide, is heated to 650‹ C. in a current of nitrogen ; this gas is then shut off. and hexahydrobenzene passed through the tube at the same temperature; the products, consisting of unchanged hexahydrobenzene and other gases, e.g. butadiene, butylene, propylene and ethylene, are cooled and condensed and separated, for example as described in Specification 302,203, [Class 8 (ii), Air and gases, Treating &c.]; hydrogen and a small amount of methane are also obtained (2) a tube of an alloy known as " Nichromtherm." lined with an alloy of copper and manganese, is charged with burnt magnesia and heated to 700‹ C. in a. current of nitrogen; this gas is shut off and a mixture of cyclohexane and water vapour is passed through the tube, so that the cyclohexane remains in contact with the catalyst for about 5 seconds; a good yield of the same olefines and diolefines as in example 1 is obtained. Specifications 269,593 ; 272,539, (as open to public inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts), [Class 32, Distilling &c.], 296,034, 296,694, 296,752 and 297,398, also are referred to.
