Abstract
317,145. Toyne, F. D., and Hunt & Winterbotham, Ltd. May 16, 1928. Waterproofing; proofing processes and compositions.-Woollen or other cloth for printers' blankets, tennis-ball covers, gaiters, shoe uppers, and other purposes is waterproofed by conveying the material without previous treatment with other proofing agents through a receptacle by feeding rollers and applying directly to it a solution of rubber or gutta-percha in a volatile solvent such as carbon bisulphide, benzol, petrol, carbon tetrachloride, xylene, or toluene. The solution may be picked up and conveyed to the cloth by one or more. rollers-partly immersed in the solution or it may be applied by other auxiliarv rollers which distribute. it over the. surface of the main rollers which in turn apply it to the cloth. While still wet the cloth is subjected to a squeezing process to remove surplus rubber &c. by rollers or adjustable scraper knives and is subsequently dried.. Vulcanizing agents may be added to the solution and the cloth be heated to a vulcanizing temperature. The apparatus is preferably enclosed in a chamber connected to a solvent recovery plant.
