Chain-stitching and double-loop stitching; stitches.-A stitch for sewing the uppers of turnshoes to soles is formed by spreading the needle loop of the barbed needle and anchoring the thread at both the points of penetration of the curved needle. The needle loop 8, Fig. 6, is spread by the member 7 and hook 6 to the shape shown in Fig. 7, so that the completed stitch has the form shown in Fig. 4. The apparatus comprises the curved barbed needle 3, Fig. 5, operating in a plane parallel with the axes of the operating cams on the main shaft, the work bender 18, looper 4 mounted on the shaft 5, and loop spreaders 6, 7. The member 6 is mounted on the rod 12, which is reciprocated by the plunger 14 and rotated by the segment 16.
