350,444. Sewing-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. and RICKS, F., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester. March 8, 1930, No. 7590. [Class 112.] Boot-sole stitching and assembling machines; feed by awls; pressure-feet.-Curved hook needle sewing machines for uniting the felt sole of a shoe to an unlasted upper, of the type disclosed in Specifica. tions 4173/12, 168,403, and 317,921, [all in Class 112, Sewing &c.], are rendered capable of sewing felt of poor quality to an upper without tearing the felt by a presser formed to clamp the work at the point of emergence of the needle and a feed awl which engages the stitching instead of the felt. The presser 1 has an arm 9 extending across the plane of the curved needle and projections 15, 16 which in effect clamps the felt down at the point of emergence of the needle. The presser is clamped down by the engagement of a screw 7 carried bv the arm 6 of the bender 5, with the lug 8. The feed awl 22 engages the stitching to effect the feed movements, so avoiding tearing the felt. A thread finger 20 pulls off a bight of thread as the presser descends and pulls the thread back over the presser to avoid tearing the felt. The looper 23 loops the thread round the needle 11 to form the chain stitch.
