Abstract

315,931. Huggins, H. J. May 4, 1928. Repairs, facilitating.-Apparatus for inspecting or repairing stop-taps, valves, &c. without interrupting the fluid supply comprises a clamp attachable to the valve &c. body, a casing attachable to the clamp and having an aperture adapted to be closed by a sliding gate, and a manipulating chamber which may be readily attached to and removed from the casing; tools for unscrewing and removing valve parts are also provided. The device is temporarily attached to the stop cock, valve, &c. by a clamp A in .two parts, Fig. 8, tightened round the valve &c. body by bolts and nuts A', A<3>. A tight joint is ensured by packing B. The casing C is attachable by bolts to the clamp A and has rubber or other pliable material C<4> secured to the cover C<3>. A gate D movable on runners C<6> is adapted to be moved across the aperture C<5> to close the casing C by means of racks and pinions D<2>, D<3>. The manipulating- chamber E is attached to the casing by a clamping-plate F and bolts and nuts C<7>, C<8>, and is provided with an illuminating lamp I and observation window E<5>. A wrench or gripping device for unscrewing the stuffing-box Z<2> comprises jawmembers H, H<1>, Fig. 3, pivoted to a part H' and clamped on the stuffing-box Z<2> by pivoted bolts H<5> and nuts H<8>. The wrench is actuated by a key G passing through a detachable plug at the top of the chamber E and having a projection G<1> engaging stops H<9> below the part H<2>. The stuffing-box, after being unscrewed from the valve, is lifted into the chamber E and removed together with the latter after the aperture C<5> has been closed by the gate D. A tool for removing the washer Z<3> shown in Figs. 7 and 7<A>, comprises a pair of jaws L<2> pivoted at L<1> to a tube L passing through the removable plug E<2> and actuated for gripping the washer by an enlargement L<4> on a threaded rod L<5>.
