Abstract
315,607. Johns-Manville Corporation, and Cannon, P. D. Aug. 28, 1928. Ring and traveller frames; stop-apparatus, non - automatic.- Fibrous material, such as asbestos, which, by reason of the short length, stiffness, and low coefficient of surface friction of the individual fibres, is difficult to treat by the usual process of spinning, is formed into a strand or yarn by helically wrapping around one or more carded and condensed rovings of s u c h material either alone or mixed with other material such as cotton, a. filament or filaments and twisting it by spinning in a direction to tighten the helical wrapping. The stages in the formation of the yarn are shown in Fig. 3, three rovings S being wrapped by filaments F of cotton, linen, or other thread or of metal wire, laid so that the lineal distance from turn to turn is not greater than the length of the longer fibres of the roving and preferably of the same dimensional order or less than the mean length, the subsequent twisting serving further to bind the roving and to embed the filaments therein as shown in Fig. 5; a central core or cores C of cordage or wire may be provided. The yarn is produced in a machine which is described but not claimed; this descriptive matter is comprised in Specification 315,606, wherein the machine is fully described and claimed.
