Paper carriages and supports; platen-shift mechanism; sheet feeding and guiding arrangements.-The Platen shaft is yieldingly mounted in a shift frame which is mounted in the carriage and provided with feedrollers, the arrangement enabling the platen to move away from the feed-rollers when thick sheets are inserted. The carriage may be provided with an adjustable rollermounting, and an apron secured to the shift frame may carry an adjustable side-gauge. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, the shaft of the platen 14 is arranged in slots in a shift frame 7<1> and is pressed downwards by small coiled-springs 85, the platen being thereby held in yielding contact with feed-rollers 15 carried by an apron 15<1> on the shift frame. The shift frame is vertically guided in the carriage and is shifted by means of forked levers 13 which are pivoted on the carriage and engage the platen shaft. The levers are connected by a rod 19 engaging rollers 21 on a block 20 provided with a rod 22 carried by forked links 23 which engage guide pins 24 and are connected by links 24<1> to the shift-key levers. The carriage is provided with rollers 10 which run on V-guides 12 and are mounted on the bent ends of adjustable plates 9 secured to the carriage by means of screws 11 passing through slots, alternate pairs of rollers engaging the guides at the top and bottom. A shelf 16 on the apron carries an adjustable side-gauge 17 which is formed with an ear 17<1> entering a slot and is retained by a leaf-spring. A detachable sheetmetal front 4 for the machine carries a transparent paper-pressing plate 6. The machine may include the type-lever action described in Specification 317,511. Letter-spacing mechanism.-A carriage-propelling spring 75, Fig. 11, is connected to a tape 76 provided with a U-member 76<1> which normally engages a slot 76<11> in the carriage but is caught by a stationary bar 78 when the carriage is removed from the machine. The carriage may be controlled by the escapement described in Specification 317,509 an escapement-operating link 38 being connected to an arm 39 on a rock-shaft 40 carrying a universal bar 42 which is arranged under the key-levers 62 and engages the forked ends 42<1> of the space-bar levers. Line-spacing mechanism.-The platen is provided at each end with a ratchet-wheel, and a line-spacing lever carrying a pawl is adapted to be mounted at either end of the carriage.
