Abstract
314,867. Stelkens, W. July 3, 1928, [Convention date]. Adhesives.-In a process for the glueing of leather, the adhesive is used in the form of a dry powder or film between the surfaces to be glued. The softening of the dry material and resulting adhesion of the surfaces is carried out by warming, or by moistening the surfaces to be glued or the adhesive film itself with a suitable solvent, to such an extent that no actual solution, but only a swelling of the adhesive occurs. The glueing may then be completed by pressure. Suitable adhesives are water-resisting, such as cellulose esters or ethers, indiarubber together with known non-volatile plastifiers, resinous condensation or polymerization products of organic compounds, espevcially mixtures with cellulose esters. According to examples (1) acetyl cellulose, and triphenyl phosphate are mixed in a dry powdered state. The leather surfaces are moistened by brushing with a solution of acetyl cellulose in acetone, and the dry powder is spread uniformly over the moistened surface and excess removed by tapping. Thetreated surfaces are pressed together while warming, and complete adhesion is soon obtained. (2) Nitro-cellulose, tri-phenyl phosphate and dibutyl phthalate are dissolved in a mixture of alcohol and ether in such proportions that a film is obtained when the solution is poured over a smooth surface. To facilitate the removal of such a film, gauze is laid on the surface on which it is poured, and becomes embedded in the film on drying. For glueing, the surfaces are moistened with alcohol, the film laid between and the whole placed under pressure for a short time.
