Abstract

314,362. Johnson, L. J., and Johnson, H. L. March 26, 1928. Detachable installations. - An outboard motor with adjustable propeller for steering has a housing for the propeller and gear which is of doublewedge or streamline form. The housing carries a horizontal cavitation plate and also has openings for the cooling water adjacent to the propeller. To the depending tubular casing 8, Fig. 5, is secured the underwater housing 72, Fig. 3, the section of which at 9, 9 is of double-wedge shape, Fig. 9, and at 7, 7 is of streamline form, Fig. 7. The housing is cored to form passages for the cooling water which connect up to pipes 44, 42 and to openings 110, 114 above the propeller 98 and below the cavitation plate 70. The inlet opening has a grid 118 facing forward. The propeller shaft is mounted in bearings 80, 82 and is driven by bevel wheels 84, 86, those parts being assembled through a forward opening closable by the nosing 92 which has a grease nipple 96. The motor carries a rail to which the steering handle is attached.
