Abstract

313,899. Carey, J. M., and Illingworth, S. R. March 19, 1928. Mine props. - A mine prop is formed of a tube a enclosing an upstanding rod d and an upper sliding piston-member f resting on a block of wood w or other crushable medium of less diameter than the enclosing chamber. By this arrangement, two separate yieldings are obtained under load, as shown in Fig. 5, the first due to the crushing of the block to fill the confining chamber at 35,000 lbs. pressure, and the second due to the crushing of the fibres of the wood in the chamber to 75,000 lbs. pressure, the total yield being about 2 ins. The rods may be hollow with bearing plates k interposed between them and the wood,
