Abstract

313,660. Beeston, J. P., and Pawsey, P. G. March 20, 1928. Jacks. - Lifting-jacks of the parallel-motion type having two main levers pivoted on stationary axes and connected by a main link are provided with operating and controlling means which are carried by the link and by a lever pivoted to the link. The main levers 11, 12, Fig. 2, are pivoted on stationary axis 13 and are connected by pivots 16 to a main link 15. An extension 18 of the main lever 12 and a subsidiary lever 19 are connected by a subsidiary link 21 carrying a crutch 24. The operating lever 37 is mounted on the main link 15 by a pivot 20 and engages an auxiliary lever 32 pivoted on the main link and carrying a lifting pawl 34 engaging a toothed sector 31 on the subsidiary lever 19, a holding pawl 38 being pivoted to the main link 15. The toothed sector may be mounted on the lower main lever. Two internally-toothed sectors may be used and are moved by a pinion and ratchet wheel actuated b a pawl on the operating lever.. The two main levers 11, 12, Fig. 5, mounted on a frame 42 are connected by a main link 15, the crutch 24 being carried by subsidiary levers 43, 44. The main lever 11 and subsidiary lever 44 have toothed sectors 46 engaged by pawls 53 on an auxiliary lever 48 pivoted on the main link and engaging the operating lever 50. This construction may be modified so that the operating lever actuates the pawls directly. The toothed sectors may be operated by a worm instead of by pawls. The complete lifting-jack comprises a frame 63, Fig. 11, having main levers 68, 75, connected by a main link 70, the lower main levers 68 having toothed sectors 73. The subsidiary levers 77, 79 are connected by a subsidiary link 81 carrying an adjustable crutch 83. The toothed sectors are engaged by lifting pawls 88 and holding pawls 89 connected by linkage 93 to pivoted catches 100 engageable with a stop 99 and connected by tension springs 96 to a control handle 94 pivotally mounted on the operating lever 86. For lifting a load, the control handle is swung over to the dotted line position so that the pawls engage the sectors. To lower the load, the control handle is put in the full line position so that the pawls clear the sectors except when the operating handle is either fully raised or fully lowered. Specification 326,556 is referred to.
