Hand-trucks.-In hand-trucks of the kind in which the platform is elevated in stages by reciprocation of the steering handle operating a ratchet and pawl, a controlling arm or sector is provided in conjunction with the ratchet, elevating pawl, and a sustaining pawl, and is adapted to co-operate with stops &c. in such a manner that elevating, steering, or lowering may be effected according to the position of the controlling arm, the latter being thrown into neutral position when the elevating or lowering is completed. The ratchet 6 is pivoted at 6<1> on the swivel head 2 and the handle 4 is pivoted at 5, the elevating pawl 8 being pivoted at 9. The movement of the ratchet 6 causes a thrust link 7 to bear on the axle post, downward pressure on which through linkage 16 causes the platform 1 to rise. A sustaining pawl 10, pivoted at 5, engages the ratchet 6 after each stroke of the elevating pawl 8. A controlling arm 11 is adapted to be moved into any one of three positions. In the first, the controlling arm is out of action and the elevating pawl may function. In the remaining positions, the disengagement of the appropriate pawls is the steering handle. In the second position, the elevating pawl is moved out of engagement with the ratchet by means of a stop, but the ratchet 5 is held by the sustaining pawl 10 so that the handle is free to be moved for steering. In the third position, the sustaining pawl is also released thus allowing the platform 1 to be lowered. Stops 15 are provided so as to move, by raising the steering handle, the controlling arm 11 into mid-position after elevating or lowering. A dashpot 14 or the like is provided to control the lowering of the platform 1.
