Abstract
313,352. Courtaulds, Ltd., Adcock, F., Baguley, N. G., and Wilson, D. L. July 23, 1928. Sodium acetate.-Anhydrous sodium acetate is produced by treating practically anhydrous acetic acid with sodium or sodium amalgam. Sodium amalgam is prepared by electrolysis of brine, using a. mercury cathode, the liquid cathode material being circulated to and from a vessel containing acetic acid. Preferably the acetic acid is at a raised temperature such as 30-60‹ C., and may be circulated to and from a vessel in which it is cooled so as to separate the acetate. A beat exchanger may be employed. The separated acetate contains acetic acid in loose combination, which may be driven off by heat.
