Proofing against vermin; wood, treating with liquids.- Wood is preserved by treating it in situ with an insecticide under diminished pressure, preferably by producing a reduction of pressure within the wood and then applying an insecticide under pressure, for instance, by spraying. The reduction of pressure and the application of insecticide may take place simultaneously over adjacent zones, or on opposite or adjacent sides of the wood. The treatment may be carried out by means of a sprayer mounted on the wall of a vacuum nozzle, and a solution of naphthalene in carbon tetrachloride mav be used as an insecticide and preservative. A suitable apparatus comprises a vacuum nozzle or chamber 2, Fig. 1, having a rubber lip 3, and attached to a fibre tube 5. The latter is connected by means of a union 6 to a hose leading to a vacuum pump. The sprayer 1 is mounted in the nozzle 2, and an operating lever 9 is provided which operates a throttle valve in the suction pipe and a valve in the compressed air pipe 7 which leads to the sprayer, so that when one valve is opened the other is closed. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the chamber 2 js divided into two parts, 16, 17, the former containing the sprayer 15, and the latter applying the vacuum, so that suction treatment and spraying take place at the same time over adjacent parts of the wood.
