Abstract
311,263. Universal Winding Go., (Assignees of Swanson, E. R.). May 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Winding machines; stop-motions.-In a drum winding-machine, wherein to arrest its rotation the yarn or like package C, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is separated from the driving drum 5 and a brake applied approximately simultaneously to - the package, a brake-drum 50 is coupled to the winding-spindle 20 and is engaged by brakeband 56, an intermediate member 70 being moved firstly to apply the brake and secondly to move the winding-spindle support 30 and lift the package C. The lever 70 has lost motion relatively - to the package support 21, the lost motion being utilised for applying the braking action, after which the members 21, 70 move bodily to lift the package C. The stop-motion which operates on breakage of the yarn or on completion of the winding is of the type described in Specification 283,546. The package is wound on a tube T supported on the winding-spindle 20, Fig. 4. which is carried on a support 30 on the arm 21 pivoted at 22. The butt end of the spindle 20 is formed with an enlarged bearing 45 on which is rotatively mounted a flanged disc 50 constituting the brake-drum. The disc 50 is formed with radial splines 51 which engage a cross-slot t in the tube T, and with a flanged rim 55 the interior of which is adapted to be engaged by a brake-band 56 supported at 57 on a pin 58 and having a parallel-sided opening 60 whereby it may be expanded by the cam-portion 62 of a pin 61 adapted to be moved by the member 70 through a crank arm 65 carrying a pin 67 provided with an eccentric bushing 68, the bushing 68 engaging a fork 73 of the lever 70 which is pivoted at 72 on the member 21. The main element of the lifting-means is a rockable rod 87 to which is secured a lever 88 formed with arms 90, 97 under the control of a spring 91 and carrying the spring-controlled lifting-pawl 98 engaging the ratchet 100 which depends from the lever 70. The yarn y is wound on the tube T by the traversing-guide 11 and as the package C grows the arm 21 swings upwardly about the pivot 22, the quadrant 83 riding past the dog 84 and the ratchet 100 past the pawl 98. On the actuation of the stop-motion, the spring 91 turns the lever 88 clockwise (Fig. 8) whereupon the pawl 98 forces the ratchet 100 upwardly to lift the package C off the drum 5. Firstly, however, the pawl 98 rocks the lever 70 and depresses the brake-arm 65 to expand the brake-band 56 and stop the rotation of the package C. The bush 68 may be adjusted on the stud 67 to ensure that the brake is applied simultaneously with the lifting of the package. The brake is released manually to piece the broken end or to turn the package on the spindle 20 by means of a lever 77 secured to the main carrier 21 and provided with a flat cam-plate 76 engaging an opening 75 in the arm 74 of the lever 70. To doff the wound package the spindle 20 is swung forwardly. the crank pin 67 being thereby removed from the slot 73 and the brake released.
