Be it known that I, Uri-Meal). Joyce, a citizen of the United States,= residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylv-a'nia, have invented certain new and useful limprovementsin' inding lvlacliin'es ofwhich'the following is a specification;
My invention relates to windingmachines and pertains more particularly to means for sta'iting'the skein and swift simultaneously with the operation of the means for starting the winding'spindle.
Heretofore it has beenthe practice to wind silk or other filament upon a spool upon which such filament is hereafter wound upon a bobbin. It is the purpose of my invention to eliminate the intermediate step of winding from a skein upon spool and to permit the winding directly from a skeinupon a bobbin.
This result is obtained primarily by reason of imparting an initial turning movement to the skein and swift simultaneously with the starting of the winding movement of the spindle upon which the bobbin is carried whereby the stress or strain upon the filament caused by the lag or inertia of the skein and swift is eliminated, which is likely to cause breakage and interruption of the winding and unwinding movement.
To these ends my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a table or frame upon which the winding soindle 2 and other structures of a winding device are mounted together with the thread guide 3 adjacent to said spindle. Upon the same table and supported by the bracket 4 is carried a swift 5 upon which a skein of filament 6 may be mounted, which filament may be led through the tensioning devices 6, 7 and 8 to the guide 3 and thereafter upon a bobbin, not shown; carried upon the winding-spindle 2.- t t t Theswlft 511S'0f00111761117101131 101111 comprising a' hub 9, having radial spokes, 10 to support the skein and is also provided with a flexible brake 11 :having a depending weight 12 for imparting frictional resistance upon the-hub thereof.

As heretofore indicated, it i-sfthegpu pose of my invention. tohimpart a turning movement to the swift 5 simultaneously with the starting of the winding movement of the spindle 2. This result is accomplished by providing or mounting an arm 14 upon the rod 13 at one end thereof and connecting the opposite end with a lever 15 mounted uponthe bracket 16 adjacent to one end of the hub 9. It will be observed that the arm 14 may be adjustably mounted upon the rod 13 by a sleeve or collar 17 and secured thereon by a set screw 18 for the purpose of adjusting the travel of saidarm and the consequent throw of the lever 15.
Adjacent to the bracket 16 and carried upon the end of the hub 9, is mounted the annular ratchet 15 with which the lever 14 may contact when moved by the turning movement of the rod 13 to start the action of the spindle 2 by which movement isimparted to the rod or pitman 20 attached to 'the outer or free end of the arm 14 at its lower extremity and to the said lever 15 intermediate of its ends.
Said lever 15 is provided at its free end with a pawl-like point which in its travel downwardly will engage one of the teeth of the ratchet plate 15 to impart initial movement to the swift 5. The opposite .movement in the stopping turn of the shaft 13 will engage the opposite faces of the ratchet teeth 18 and impart a braking or stopping action to the hub 8 and swift 5.
As shown more particularly in Figure 3 of the drawings, the lever 15 is loosely mounted upon the bracket 16 whereby a of the stud 22. This construction holds the lever in operative contact when in lowered position with the pawl and when the starter rod 13 is turned to the stopping position, said pawl is lowered into contact with the teeth of the ratchet and serves as a brake upon the hub of the swift and prevents un winding of the skein by the momentum which the swift has attained.
It will be obvious, therefore, that in the operation of my device, an initial starting movement is imparted to'the. swift and the skein carried thereon simultaneously with the starting of the winding movement of the spindle 2 whereby any tug upon the fila ment to be wound upon the bobbin is eliminated, and it will be further appreciated that the unwinding movement, due to the momentum which the swift and skein has obtained maybe eliminated by reason of the braking action of the lever 15 hearing against the bevelled faces of the ratchet teeth 18 when the lever 14 is turned to stopping position.
It will also be appreciated that my invention is not limited to the uses disclosed as applied to skeins, but may be equally adapted to spools or other devices from which filaments are to be unwound.
I claim- In combination, a winding spindle, means for rotating said spindle, a rotatable rod for starting and stopping said rotating means, a swift or the like for carrying the filament to be wound upon said spindle, an annular ratchet carried on said swift, an arm mounted on said starting rod, a pawl loosely mounted adjacent to said ratchet and in engagement therewith, a rod connecting said arm and pawl to operate the pawl to engage the ratchet to impart a'starting movement to the swift simultaneously with the starting of the spindle, and to reversely engage the ratchet when operated to stop the spindle and brake the movement of the swift, substantially as described.
