Abstract

311,137. Ploetner, O. June 29, 1928. Yarns.-Artificial silk yarn is coated with a mucilage of paste-like consistency, and the coating then smoothed and polished. Preferably the yarn is passed through the mucilage contained in a vessel or chamber, and then between pieces of rubber sponge. The mucilage consists of soft soap, gylcerine and potato meal, preferably in the proportion of 7 to 8 parts of soap, 1 to 2 parts of glycerine and 1 part of potato meal. Colloidal material such as white of egg, gum tragacanth, gum arabic or agar-agar may be used instead of potato meal. The yarn k, Fig. 1, runs from a reel a over a roller b and through an opening d in the lid of the vessel c. The latter is divided into two parts by a partition, the partition and one end of the vessel being slotted to permit passage of the yarn. The part g contains the mucilage, while the part h contains two pieces of rubber sponge of such width that their faces are pressed together when they are forced in. The yarn passes under a guide l, through the slot in the partition, between the faces of the pieces of rubber sponge and out through the slot in the end of the vessel. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the vessel c is divided into three compartments, the outer two containing pieces of rubber sponge m<1>, m<2>, while the middle one contains the mucilage. Slots for the passage of the yarn are formed in the end walls and in the dividing partitions. The vessel may be supported in a pan q, to one end of which may be fixed a thread guide r.
