Rotary mixers.-A machine for kneading, crushing, mixing, &c. comprises a receptacle rotatable about a horizontal axis, and one or more rollers yieldingly held against the inside wall and carried on arms mounted on journals wholly contained within, and supported independently of, the walls of the receptacle; the container is provided with a hinged sector for charging and discharging, and the driving gear is adapted to rotate the roller mountings so as to vary the position of the rollers, or to facilitate discharge by means of a scraper attached thereto and engaging the inside of the container. The roller 117 is mounted on arms 114, 115 pivoted to arms 110, 111 mounted on a hollow shaft 104, 105, a coiled spring 118 being arranged on the pivot 112 to press the roller into engagement with the receptacle wall. The receptacle, provided with a hinged sector 119, is rotated from a shaft 123 through a clutch 124 and gears 130, 131, the shaft 105 being held stationary by the engagement of a clutch member 134 thereon with a fixed sleeve 109. The clutch members 124, 134 are operated by a common lever 126 which, when thrown to the right, disengages the clutch 124 from the member 127 the rotation of which is then stopped by a tooth 128 connected by a spring 137 with the lever 126; simultaneously, the clutch member 134 is disengaged from the fixed sleeve 109 to permit rotation of the shaft 105, the positive driving of which is effected by the engagement of the clutch member 124 with the member 128, and gears 132, 133. The shaft 105 is rotated to vary the position of the roller, or, when the container is opened, to discharge the material, this being aided by a scraper 140 mounted on the arms 110. To prevent the roller flying outside of the open container the pivoted arms 110, 114 are provided with interengaging stops.
