Abstract

310,101. Ghirardi, L. Jan. 28, 1928. Screw propellers; propelling by forming vacuum ahead. -A device for propulsion of ships comprises a revolution body formed by a line of the second degree with its vertex on the axis and rotating on that axis for the purpose of utilizing centrifugal action in forcing the water rearwardly. The ship is provided with rotary propelling members 5, 6, Fig. 2, in addition to the usual screws 2, 3. These rotary propelling members 5 have surfaces a, b generated from a line 8 of the second degree (Fig. 6) about the axis of rotation 7, the surfaces acting so that water is gradually passed out from the axis rearwardly. This action may be increased by the provision of non-helical ribs on the surface. The centre part of the body may be omitted, whereby water can penetrate to the inside of the body and be further acted upon to produce a thrust. The surfaces instead of being plain may be of undulating form as at 13 (Fig. 9). Specifications 8290/90 and 162,066 are referred to.
