Pencil holders, sharpeners, and point-protectors; leads.-In a pencil holder having a sharpening-device for the lead located in the conical nozzle which, together with a guide member, is longitudinally-displaceable relatively to the casing, the casing and guide member are connected together so as to enable them to be tilted into sharpening-position without altering the position of the lead relative, to its carrier. The lead 4, which is of flattened, square, or other non-circular cross-section, is carried in a correspondingly-shaped tube 12 attached to an operating- head 16 rotatable on the end of the barrel 1. The lead, which may be coated with paper or paint, is engaged by a screw-thread on the end of a fixed sleeve 10 so that rotation of the head 16 results in propulsion or retraction of the lead. A sleeve 6, attached to the sleeve 10, is provided with a flange 7 adapted to engage a flange 8 on the end of a tubular member 3 slidable in the casing 1 and carrying the nozzle 2 formed internally with an abrading-surface 9 or coated with emery for sharpening the lead. When the member 3 is withdrawn from the casing, the parts 1, 3 can tilt relatively to one another to enable the lead to be sharpened. Receptacles for spare leads may be provided. In modifications, the nozzle and part 3 are detachable from the lead carrier, and the parts 3, 10 are connected together by a spring. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the nozzle can, if desired, be used as a point-protector, and that the abrading-surface is arranged to be exchangeable. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
