Abstract
308,771. Ternstedt Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of McCullough, J. F. K., and Gilchrist, B. W.). March 29, 1928, [Convention date]. Chromium, depositing.-The bath consists of a solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorochromate; this may be obtained by treatment of a chromate or bichromate with a quantity of hydrochloric acid amounting to not less than 5 per cent of the final bath. A certain amount of chromium chromate may be formed by the addition of oxalic acid. In an example 240 gms. of sodium bichromate is dissolved in ¢ litre of warm water; 154 gms. concentrated hydrochloric acid and then 3.75 of hydrated oxalic acid are added and the solution made up to 1 litre with water. The temperature of electrolysis may be from room temperature to 160 F., and the cathode current density 100-500 amps per sq. foot at 4-13 volts. A slower bath is obtained by substituting for the above proportions 360 gms. sodium bichromate, 77 gms. hydrochloric acid, and 240 gms oxalic acid. The free hydrochloric acid may be replaced by acetic acid or phosphoric acid. Insoluble anodes of graphite or magnetite or chromium anodes or both may be used. Specification 292,094 is referred to.
