Abstract
308,619. Rakowitzky, S., and Rakowitsky, H., (trading as Rakowitzky Geb., S. & H.). March 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Testing coins.-A device for use in coin-freed machines for determining whether a coin has a rim or not, of the kind in which the coin slides between two opposed teeth or knife edges resiliently pressed towards each other, comprises a shoot k, Fig. 1, cut away at 3 at the bottom towards one side, into which gap teeth 10, 11 on arms 8, 9, Fig. 2, project. The arms 8, 9 are pivoted at 6, 7 to plates 4, 5 secured to the outside of the shoot, and are pressed towards each other by springs 14, 15, the tension of which can be regulated by set screws s. The lower end of the shoot is bevelled at r on the side nearer the gap 3, and the teeth 10, 11 are formed as shown in Fig. 3 with a tapered space l between them. A rimless coin or smooth disc is not gripped by the teeth 10, 11 but slides straight through to a reject shoot 20, the space l tending to deflect it into that shoot. A coin with a rim is caught by the teeth and swings in its own plane about the points of the teeth until it strikes against the bevelled portion r. Owing to the impact, it will be disengaged from the teeth and drop to a shoot 21, which conveys it into the coin-freed machine. The insertion shoot k may be inclined so that the coins roll along the side nearer to the teeth 10, 11.
