Pottery surfaces, ornamenting. - Ceramic, glass, &c. articles are decorated by first applying coatings of colour (e.g. lustres) and then applying covering layers of substances, which are liquids at the firing temperature having greater surface tension than the softened colouring layer beneath and which contract to form a net-work, the fine veins of which displace the adjacent colouring layer. The covering layer may consist of glycerine, ethylene-glycol, chloral hydrate, &c. in aqueous solution, aqueous alcoholic solution &c. Gum arabic, tragacanth, gelatine, &c. may be added to the solution, and also, if desired, cane sugar. The covering layer may comprise : gum arabic, 40 grams; glycerine, 40 grams; sugar, 100 -grams; alcohol, 300 grams; water, 520 grams, and such -solution may be applied by brushing, dipping, spraying &c. to the dry or soft under-layer. The colouring solution may comprise metals, such as gold, silver, &c., or metal oxides &c. colloidally dissolved, with the additon of resins &c., in oils such as oil of turpentine or oil of lavender. The coated article is allowed to stand for some time before firing, or if desired the article may be pre-heated. The covering layers may contain metal salts &c. to produce colours which are different from the colour of the lustre, and in such cases the ground layer may comprise colourless resin-oil mixtures.
