Abstract

395,482. Enamelling. PORCELAIN ENAMEL & MANUFACTURING CO. OF BALTIMORE, 5601, Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, U.S.A. April 30, 1932, No. 12513. Convention date, May 6, 1931. [Class 56.] A process for producing vitreous enamelled articles having a multicoloured appearance consists in forming a rough surface on an article applying colours to the surface in such a manner that the article appears to be of different colour when viewed from different directions, and then firing the article to produce a smooth surface. In carrying out the process, the article A is first cleaned and a preparatory or ground coating B may be applied. A moist enamel coating C may then be applied, and coarse particles E of enamel frit are dusted on to the moist coating to form a rough surface. Alternatively, the rough coating may consist of crushed glass, or of minerals having low fusing-points, and it may be incorporated with a fluid binder. The rough surface may also be formed by any other suitable method, such as by using a rough, dull enamel for the ground coat. A light dusting of enamels of different colours is next applied to the rough surface from different directions, by means of spraying-devices D, D<1>, for example, so that each colour is mainly applied to different facets F, G of the particles E. The article now appears to be differently coloured according to the direction from which it is viewed. Finally the coated article is fired, and the enamel fuses and forms a smooth surface which has a multicoloured appearance produced by the diffusion of the colours employed. Compositions of suitable enamels are given in the Specification, and Specification 5536/93, [Class 16, Books], is referred to.
