Description

an onrc,
oTTo PALM, m, or RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY, assrenon TO THE PALM BROTHERS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROCESS FOR PRINTING AND MANUFACTURING DECALCOMANIAS FOR DECORATING GLASS BOTTLES, &o. r
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO PALM, Jr.', a citizen of the United States, residing at Rahway, county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Process for Printing and Manufacturing Decalcomanias for Decorating Glass Bottles, Jars, and other Manufacture of Glass, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new process for printing and making decalcomanias for decorating all kinds of glass-ware, such as bottles, jars, lamp shades, tumblers, glass table ware, etc. At present all decoration of glass-ware is done by hand and in addition thereto this decoration requires two firings or annealingsthe first being the firing or annealing of the white enamel background, which serves as a backing or ground work for the mineral glass colors; this background is generally put on the glass by one or more coatings of white glass enamel. After this first firing or annealing. of the enamel background, the decoration in various mineral glass colors, is applied to or painted on the firedenamel background and the article then receives its second firing or annealing.
This decoration may consist of lettering, floral or'scr'oll designs, landscapes, heads or any desirable decoration and in any number of colors. The present process of decorating glass-ware istherefore, very costly, owing to the amount of hand work on same, as well as thetwo firings or annealings required to perfect the same.
Decalcomanias manufactured by my new process require but one firing or. annealing, imd I accomplish th'sby proceeding as f0 ows:
'I use the regular decalcomania papereither single paper or duplex. I print on this paper the decoration I desire to use, whether lettering, flowers, landscapes or any other designs, in regular mineral glass colors by the printin process. This printing process may be one in so-called moist colors, when the colors are mixed with printing or litho varnish and this mixture printed on the decalcomania paper; or the mineral glllass .colors may be applied by printing t e litho varnish on the paper and then dusting the colors on in powder form.
Specification of Letters'Patent.
Patented Mar, 26, 31918.
Application filed September 18, 1915. Serial No. 51,469.
In cases where one printing of color is not heavy or strong enough I make several printings of moist colors, or powder colors, or both. Having finished the desired deco-- ration in the various colors by the aforesaid printing or dusting process of colors, I require the white background for the different colors so as to bring them out, because without such a background the different colors,
are so thin and transparent that they are almost invisible after the firing or annealing to the glass surface. I accomplish this, by covering, printing or backing up the various colors with a coating, layer or backing ofmineral glass color, commercially known as Chinese white, or several backings of same. This Chinese white coating, printing or background, may be mixed with litho varnish when printing or applying the same moist, or it may be applied by dusting same on a print of litho varnish. Or, in case a more solid backing or coating of Chinese white is required, I print several moist layers, or several dusting layers, or both, of this color. In cases where the white background is to be in solid form, square, oval or other shape, I print or coat the background of Chinese white in such desired shape or form; and wherever the color decoration is to be in relief, without a solid background, I confine the background of Chinese white to the exact outline of the various colors of the decoration or design. Whenever the decalcomania decoration is to befired or annealed to glass-ware or surfaces that will stand a firingheat of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit or more, it is not necessary to mix the printing colors or the Chinese white with flux to make the colors fire properly; but when thedecalcomania decoration is to be fired or annealed to softer lass, that will not stand more than 600 or 00 degrees Fahrenheit, it is necessary to mix the glass colors, and the Chinese white 4 I this coating has become tacky or sticky, the
decalcomania laid on the varnished surface and then transferred in the usual manner aforesaid. The transfer thus made is then Washed with water, so as to remove the gum from the face of the transferred decalcomania, and then dried with a soft chamois skin or rag. After permitting the transferred decalcomania to become dry and hard, it is ready for firing or annealing to the glass. This firing or annealing is done by subjecting the decorated glass to a heat of from 600 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, de
pending on the softness or hardness of the glass as hereinbefore explained. An ordinary china kiln or a leer can be used for the firing or annealing. One firing or annealing only is necessary to perfect the decalcomania decoration on the glass.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The process of printing decalcomanias in mineral glass colors, conslsting in applying to a decalcomania paper a design of mineral glass colors with a suitable varnish, and then applying a backing thereto of a white mineral glass color.
2. The process of printing decalcomanias in mineral glass colors, conslsting in applying to a decalcomania paper a design of mineral 'glass colors With a suitable varnish, and then applying a solid backing to the colored design, for the purpose of bringing out the colors thereof, of layers of mineral glass color.
OTTO PALM, JR.
Signed in presence of MARIE STEINER, H. STRICKLER.
