Abstract

308,119. Thornton, J. E. May 20, 1928. Compound transparent sheets; ornamental plates. -A non-splintering transparent sheet is made by joining two compound sheets each consisting of a sheet of glass A, a thin, strongly adherent substratum B made from a dilute solution of gelatine with the addition of a minute quantity of chrome alum or of a bichromate salt and if desired of acetic acid, and a thicker reinforcing layer of glue &c. C. The sheets are united with the reinforcing layers together by heat and pressure. The reinforcing layer may consist of the following parts by weight: soft clear gelatine 25, sugar syrup or glycerine 5, glacial acetic acid 1, water 100, carbolic acid “, chrome alum 1, alcohol 5. The gelatine is allowed to swell in cold water and, having added the sugar &c., the whole is dissolved by gentle heat; the carbolic acid and chrome alum are then added and a small percentage of saponin preferably. The colloidal coatings are applied by any suitable means such as a slotted tube or photographic plate-coating apparatus, and when thicker than 0.005 inch they are preferably built up of several thin layers separately dried. The sugar &c. may be applied as a sprayed solution to one or both reinforcing sheets before pressing and omitted from the solution. The glass may be roughened by sodium silicate solution or hydrofluoric acid &c. to secure better adhesion of the substratum. The edges of the finished sheet may be sealed by dipping in a solution of cellulose and gelatine in acetic acid and acetone. Dyes or colours, designs, &c. may be applied to the substratum or reinforcing layer.
