Abstract

306,509. Gilhet, G. J. Feb. 22, 1928, [Convention date]. Pile-fabric looms wherein the pile is formed by means of transverse wires. In order that knotted loop or Oriental stitches may be formed, the raised pile threads P', Fig. 6, which have been looped over a wire 33 are lowered, the other pile threads P<2> are raised, and the pile threads P<1> are engaged by the hooks 21 of needles 2 which rise and fall and also turn. As they rise, they are first turned from a non-engaging to an engaging position as shown in Fig. 7, then they turn back again, as they continue to rise, and thus cross the pile threads P<1> under'and from one side to the other of the binding and stuffer warps W<1>, W<2>, thus forming Oriental stitches. A weft 34 is next inserted, and then the needles 2 are lowered and carry out reverse movements to those which occurred when they rise. Next the binding warps W<1> are raised and the remaining warps lowered and finally another weft 35 is inserted. The needles 2 are adjustably carried by frames 1, which are arranged in groups, and have bearings 6 slidable on guiding-columns 7 on frames 8. The frames are raised by means of a rod 15 controlled by an eccentric and acting on a roller on an adjustable bolt device 11, 12 supporting a base 9 carrying runners 10. The frames rest on these runners and they fall by their own weight. As the frames 1 and needles 2 rise and fall, the needles 2 are turned by means of pins 20 fitting through slots in plates 24, which are moved sideways by screws 25 on shafts carrying pinions 29 engaging fixed racks 30. The teeth on the racks are so arranged that as the frames 1 and needles 2 rise, the needles are first rotated a quarter of a revolution in one direction so that the hooks 21 on the needles may engage the pile warp threads. The hooks are then rotated in the reverse direction as the frames complete their upward movements to cause the engaged pile warps to cross under the stuffer and binding warps.
