Abstract

306,410. Junkers, H. Feb. 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Aeroplanes ; planes, construction of ; cars and cabins.-In a flying machine of the type having hollow wings arranged to accommodate passengers and loads, additional hollow spaces are provided which extend downwardly beneath the wings in such a manner that they are the first portions of the machine to come into contact with the ground in the event of undercarriage breakage thus absorbing the shock and affording protection to the loads carried in the wings ; these spaces are utilized to carry the less valuable inert loads. These protective spaces may extend beyond the leading edge of the wings to take the shock of the machine pitching on its nose. In the construction shown the fuselage is formed with downwardly extending hollow spaces 7 which form the protective space desired; these spaces are continued forwardly to form a nose 8. Further protective spaces are arranged on the leading edge of the wings and serve as housings for the propellers. In the case of a double fuselage machine both fuselages are designed in this manner whilst when there are more than two fuselages all or only some are employed for the formation of protective spaces. Similar spaces may be provided between the leading and trailing edges of the wings to serve as protection ir the event of failure of one side of the undercarriage only. These last-mentioned spaces only are provided on flying machines having no fuselage; in machines with fuselages the fuselages may then also be designed as protective spaces or not.
