Abstract
306,168. Arnot, R. Nov. 12, 1927. Adhesives.-Casein itself or the casein in horse chestnut, soya beans, or lupin seeds, is hydrolyzed with the production of an adhesive product which may ba used as such or may be dried for use as a food, by heating the material with water and an alkali carbonate or bicarbonate or an alkaline earth oxide or magnesia or an organic base as urea, under pressure and at a temperature not exceeding 135‹ C. In examples (1) casein is heated with water and urea in an autoclave at 125‹ C., and the product may be preserved by adding a small proportion of cresylic acid or sodium fluoride; (2) soya bean meal is heated with water and urea at 125‹ C.; (3) soya bean meal is heated with water and sodium bicarbonate at 115-120‹ C. ; the cooled product may be preserved by adding boric, salicylic, or benzoic acid, or a soluble salt of such acid, and may be dried on rollers or m drying stoves to produce a flake product; (4) soya bean meal is heated with water and magnesia at 120-125‹ C., and a phenol-formaldehyde resin or a resin prepared according to Specification 290,327 may be added to produce strong adhesives; (5) soya bean meal is heated with barium hydroxide and water at 125‹ C.; (6) lupin seeds are crushed with water and heated with sodium bicarbonate solution at 125‹ C. Other additions may be made, such as rubber latex, fillers, natural gums or resins, and varnishes.
