Abstract
306,148. Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co., (Assignees of Coates, C. B.). Feb. 16, 1928, [Convention date]. Percussive tools.-In a percussive drill in which the power from an attached electric motor is transmitted to the tool through a self-contained air compressor, the piston 4 is contained in the cylinder 3 on the outside of which moves the sleeve 5 driven by the. electric motor 18 through the gearing 16, 15, and the crank 12. The space 6 between the upper end of the sleeve 5 and the cylinder 3 is filled with air through port 5<b> when the sleeve 5 is at the top of its stroke. This air is compressed as the sleeve descends, and the piston is thus forced rapidly outward, till at the completion of the stroke the air is discharged through the ports 3<b> and 5<c>. The piston makes its return stroke due to the suction caused by the sleeve 5 on its return stroke. The motor casing 19 is attached to the tool by a plate 20 which facilitates the withdrawal of the crank 12 from its bearings 13, 14 when desired. The sleeve 5 is lubricated by a pad soaked in oil and situated in the groove 23. A counter balance weight 17 may be fitted to the crank shaft.
