Abstract
305,152. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and Fellowes, F. Oct. 31, 1927. Extrusion machines. - Consists in the production of tapered or bevelled lengths of material by extrusion through a variable die. Figs. 1 and 3 show one form of apparatus, for the production of tyre tubes for india-rubber, wherein the extrusion aperture is formed between a stationary core 1 and a sleeve 2 reciprocable axially by a cam member 8. Through a crank 15, linkage 16 and connection 8a, the member 8 is rocked in such a manner as firstly, to move back the sleeve 2 gradually to close the aperture 7 and bevel the end of one length of tube, secondly to cause momentary closure of the aperture to sever the length and, thirdly, to return the sleeve gradually to open the aperture to bevel the oncoming end of the next length of tube. Fig. 6 shows a modified die for producing tread strips, in which a slit-like extrusion aperture 26 is gradually restricted and freed by a sliding member 25 operated through a crank linkage. In a further modification, for tubes, the die is controlled by an iris-diaphragm device. Tubes may be extruded on to mandrels ready for vulcanization. Fig. 5 shows a tubular mandrel 17 furnished with a ring 18 complementary to the taper of the tube, the ring being either sprung over the taper or formed of segments convergeable by an auxiliary ring 18<a>. This mandrel, and also variable extrusion dies, are disclaimed.
