Abstract
935,784. Extruding thermoplastic tubing for blow moulding bottles. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Feb. 8, 1962 [April 27, 1961], No. 15312/61. Class 87(2). In a method of producing an extruded synthetic thermoplastic tube the material is extruded through a die 1 comprising an annular cover 4, a co-axial core 5 and means for rotating the core and cover relative to one another so that the weight per unit length of the tube is controlled by varying an induced unidirectional circumferential shearing action which determines the degree of contraction of the tube as it leaves the die. The external diameter of the tube may be varied by altering the speed at which the core 5 is rotated by a pinion 8 meshing with a toothed rack 9 reciprocated by a pneumatic piston and cylinder device 11, 10. When the extruded tube is used for the blow moulding of a bottle the core 5 is not rotated during the extrusion of the length 13, Fig. 2, which expands on leaving the orifice, but is rotated whilst the length 15 is extruded so that, due to the shearing action, the latter contracts to form the neck portion of the bottle.
