Boxes combined with painting appliances; partitioned b o x e s ; dramer-and-shell boxes; boxes formed of separate shells combined in tiers; corner joints; lids. -A box comprises two superposed sheet metal compartments, one forming a pen and pencil box and the other forming or containing a colour box, and the compartments are assembled so that the two boxes are relatively slidable in a longitudinal direction and adapted to be opened independently of each other. As shown in Fig. 9, the combined box is formed from four blanks, one being bent to form the bottom a, side walls b, and back wall c, another forming an intermediate partition f and front wall n, another a sliding drawer r, and the fourth a sliding lid i. The corners of the box and drawer are secured by lugs k, u which project from the sides and are bent to engage slots in the adjacent ends. The sides of the box are formed with outwardlypressed corrugations d in which the partition f slides and with inwardly-pressed corrugations g in which the turned-over edges of the lid i slide. The drawer which contains a paint grid w slides beneath the partition f on its sides o which project below its bottom q while the front p of the drawer and cut-away portion 4 of the box allow the front to be easily grasped to withdraw the drawer. In a modification, the paint grid is disposed in an upper compartment which slides in corrugations on the edges of a lower compartment and is provided with a lid sliding in outwardly-pressed corrugations; the lid has a deep flap at its front end for moving it and for supporting the box when in its extended state.
