Abstract

Falling or projected streams, commingling.- Granular or powdered material is coated or impregnated with heated liquid by being caused to fall in a finely divided stream through a chamber in contra-flow to an atomized stream of the liquid. The material is fed by a screw conveyer 3 into a rotary drum 5 serving as a drier or cooler from which it passes by a shoot 7 on to a distributing cone 9 within a chamber 8. The liquid, e.g. liquefied pitch from a boiler 12, is injected through a constricted pipe 15, hot gas or steam being also supplied through tuyeres 11. The impregnated material is homogenized in an edge runner mill 20. The temperature at the lower part of the chamber 8 is preferably such as to revaporize surplus liquid from the mass.
